The Bethany Hills School was a university preparatory and girls boarding school that was opened in 1981. It was/is located in eastern Ontario just north of the village of Bethany, and nearby Peterborough. Due to lack of enrollment (as reported by the Peterborough Examiner - June 19th 2009) the school was closed in June 2009.
The school, and grounds have been rumoured to be haunted. We have heard from three former students, and each claim to have experienced odd things while staying at the school. The main reports seem to involve what the students say is the spirit of a former caretaker who is in or near the chapel area, the spirit of a former student, and a ghostly horse.
While some of the stories surrounding the school sound more like the makings of "urban legends" and the types of myths one would expect to be associated with a boarding school, others are intriguing enough to lend to the possibility that there may have been a ghost or two at this particular location certainly the three people who contacted us genuinely believe they experienced some form of ghostly activity while staying at the school.
Our thanks go out to the former students for sharing their experiences with us. If you have further information or can add to this report, please contact us.
