The following was submitted by one of our readers...

I helped to rebuild the Customs House when it first became a martial arts college.

Some of the people who worked there felt uneasy around the vault in the basement, and on the upper floor. One even claims to have seen a dark shadow crossing the basement. I recently visited the house to see the Italian labour exhibit, and to see the changes that had been made to the house since I worked on it.

Surprisingly, one of the employees told me he had had a short conversation with the "Black Lady", who asked him what they were doing to her house. When he explained that it was to become an exhibition place for the labourers of Ontario, she smiled and disappeared.
The customs house has been one of our most requested stories about Hamilton. It is admirably covered in Barbara Smith's "Ontario Ghost Stories" which is recommended reading for hauntings enthusiasts in Ontario. The "Black Lady" or sometimes known as the "Dark Lady" is reported to be an elderly lady dressed all in black. She has been communicated with on more the this occurance and is said to be responsible for sometimes expressing her views on renovations and exhibits by exhibiting "poltergeist like" activity.
