We received the following from one of our readers in March 2011
Hello, I was born and raised in Montreal, until moving to the London area a few years back. In Quebec, and Prince Edward County, Ottawa, Gatineau etc., there is a little game some knuckleheads pull, what this entails is moving in fast on a car, turning off the lights, and sneaking away through a blind spot by decreasing speed. This brain-dead stunt has many names, depending on the city, but it is something I have seen personally several times. I am not saying that this is the case in the QEW phantom case, but from what the witness describes, this is exactly how the stunt is performed. What is really interesting is the fact this has been going on for many years, not just this past generation, and now street racers scream around with no lights on as well. Like I said before, this does not explain when it happens with no traffic in the middle of the night, but with extensive knowledge of that stretch of highway (it is the yellow brick road to the casinos), there are several on/off ramps, the highway twists and turns, and goes up and down, several times, easy for a car to sneak off out of site. Just offering a plausible explanation, not trying to dismiss anyone's claims.
While this possible explanation cannot explain all phantom car reports as the writer suggests it is something that should be kept in mind when looking into these types of reports. Our thanks goes out to our reader who sent in their thoughts on this.
